Thriving into the Future: Standing with you…and your friends!

Humanity is commencing on yet another unprecedented experience, at least financially speaking. With trillions in assets transferring from one generation to another over the next thirty years, the greatest generational transfer of wealth in history has begun. Like most eventful periods, this season has earned a name for itself as “The Great Consolidation.”

In his acclaimed leadership book, Good to Great, Jim Collins described the pivotal difference between a good leader and a great leader. While most people view a great leader as a big personality who champions the brand, leads the crowd, and makes a large impact, Collins’ research showed these traits do not necessarily align with great leadership. If a company falters after a leader’s departure, the leader was merely good. A great leader, however, ensures their company’s success after they are gone. A great leader is identified in the transfer of leadership.

This lesson about leadership invokes important considerations for the transfer of wealth from one generation to another. Our legacy includes how well we manage our personal resources. Some people see wealth as their own, created by them and owned by them. Others see money as a blessing to steward wisely, offering opportunity to leave a deep impact and legacy. Whether you are leaving assets or receiving a financial gift, there is wisdom in ensuring your money is protected and preserved during family transition.

Wealth is neither inherently good nor bad, but it does provide options. Perhaps you hope to make a meaningful impact on your community, or establish a family trust, or fulfill a longstanding dream. You can provide a financial gift or endow an academic scholarship. The greatest transfer of wealth in history has begun, and future generations will remember this generation by the legacy we leave.
